Assuming the Salani illustrator copied the VMS (or copied a copy of the VMS) and not the other way around (which seems unlikely), he apparently did not think a 100% faithful copy was needed for whatever purpose he made the copy. The Salani drawing is not a slavish copy of the VMS plant, but it’s faithful enough that it cannot be a coincidence. I did not restrict my search to this period of history, however, but several years of research brought me back to it, time and time again, and it turned out to be the right ballpark. I knew they were not the same illustrator, but I had a feeling they they might be approximately the same time period.
